Hello all,
These are the same two orchids I found going up Constantia Neck except they were in flower a month earlier in the warmer Cederberg area. Also, there is a third species (which I have shown before).
First is a close up of Holothrix villosa. This little plant I have growing at home in some Table Mountain sand stone sand. So far no problems... The flowers are very tiny. That is a Maiden Hair fern just behind it. It smells very perfumy. The smell is also quite strong, able to fill up my 3 x 4 m living room. I hope it continues to do well.
Next is the Cederberg version of Satyrium pumilum. Notice the same overall shape to those seen on Constantia Neck but the difference in colour. The lip is also shaped differently---not at all showing the "tarantula legs" seen in the Constantia Neck plants. The plants of these which I saw in the Kamiesberg (the Cederberg is about 200 km north of Cape Town, and Kamiesberg about another 400 km north) we even less colourful.
Lastly, is Bartholina burmanniana. I found many plants in flower this year. I was helped by the fire that swept through the area earlier in the year. A lovely little flower. You can just make out the plant itself behind the flower. It is about 5 cm in diameter. Leaves flush to the ground like the Holothric except no hairs on them.

Great stuff Tyrone ! It's always a real treat to see these photos. Three great little orchids - or is it four ? Those Satyriums look morphologically distinct as well as different colours. Is pumilum really that variable ? As for Bartholina burmanniana, it's got to be one of the most beautiful orchid flowers in the world. Thanks for sharing these with us and keep going on those walks !
